Day 40 - Koh Samui

by Joe Butch on February 21, 2009

I’ve been calling it Koh Sa My for the last month and realized today at the airport the proper pronunciation. We fly from Phuket to Koh Samui on Bangkok Airways. We had to get on the plane from the ouside, the plane probably had about 80 people on it, and each wing had a big propeller.

The flight was only 55 minutes long. Koh Samui airport (USM) was really cool because it was all outside. The taxi ride from the airport to our hotel in Lamai beach costed 700 baht.

What I noticed from the taxi ride:

[x] Bad Sidewalks
[x] Lots of Mountains
[x] Lots of Puppies
[  ] Fast Food Restaurants

Amber and I got a little nervous because we only saw one McDonalds the entire taxi ride and it was nowhere near out hotel.

Our room is nice for the price, spacious, and has a dvd player. The internet is extremely slow.

We walked around and things are so much different compared to Patong Beach. Nobody is hassling you but thats probably because there is hardly any counterfeit stuff for sale.

Luckily we found a McDonalds but we did not find any other fast food resaturants. Unless we plan to eat McDonalds everyday I guess we will have to be a bit more daring, which is a good thing.

Day 9 - Things Are Not The Same

by Joe Butch on January 22, 2009

Not much to tell, I took the Chunnel from Paris to London. One thing I’ve noticed is that things you think would be completly standard are actually not the same.

Example in Asia and also in Amsterdam I’ve noticed that cheeseburgers at McDonalds don’t taste the same and have a pepper taste to them. In London at the Victoria Station I went to McDonalds and got a Big Mac and I have to say it was the most delicious Big Mac I’ve ever had. The Big Mac had a crisp to it.

Tomorrow morning I’m going to take the tube (read: subway) to the airport and a day later I will be in Hong Kong.

Day 3 - Dam Everyone Speaks Dutch!

by Joe Butch on January 15, 2009

The smell of weed was very noticeable as soon as I exited the airport in Amsterdam. Trying to find a way to our hotel is when we realized everyone speaks Dutch.

At first It wasn’t such a big deal but when we started to look for a place to eat and the majority of the menus being in dutch, we knew we had a problem. We decided to head to McDonalds but how do you tell the person you want your Big Mac plain with only cheese? I have a hard enough time ordering my cheeseburgers plain in the US so I decided to just get Chicken Nuggets and Fries.
